BRETT Carter is among the players named in Scotland's provisional 36-man squad for the Rugby League World Cup at the end of the year.

The Barrow Raiders winger has been capped six times for the Bravehearts and featured for them in the last tournament four years ago, scoring a try in their 26-24 win over Tonga at Workington.

Carter was not a part of the squad for last year's Four Nations, but now has a chance to earn a place on the plane for the World Cup in Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea, which starts in October.

“I’ve said to the players: selection will be based on performances,” said Scotland head coach and former Raiders boss Steve McCormack. “It doesn’t matter whether you are in the NRL, Super League or bottom of the Championship.

“I know a lot about these players, know I can trust them and just hope they can perform over these next seven or eight weeks and get on that plane.”

Carter is not the only Barrow-born player to be in with a chance of playing in the World Cup, with St Helens loose forward Morgan Knowles named in Wales' train-on squad last week.

And McCormack has left the door open for other players to force their way into the reckoning – among whom could be Carter's Raiders team-mate Shane Toal, who is a former Scotland under-19 international and their young player of the year in 2014.

“We’ve had our first team meeting and there is a fall-out programme that players will join as their club season ends, once they have gone on holiday for a break to recharge ahead of the World Cup,” said McCormack.

“We might add two or three more to this group as we get nearer the tournament: this not a definitive list so there is time for other players to force their way in.”

Scotland are in Group B along with co-hosts New Zealand – who they drew 18-18 with in last year's Four Nations – Samoa and Tonga, kicking off their tournament against the Kiwis in Auckland on October 28.
