A MAN-of-the-match display from Rio Corkill helped Walney Central lift the Barrow and District Youth League Under-14 Cup with a 42-16 victory over rivals Barrow Island at Craven Park.

Corkhill ran in two of Walney's eight tries and kicked a conversion in the win, with Zac Whitehead, Xander Parramore, Arnie Wilson, Jack Stevens, Ryan Wilson and Matt Henderson all going over as well.

Luke Broadbent kicked three conversions and Kian Goode added one for Cents too.

Island's replies came from Doonan Ellis, Sam Beattie and Jamie Hill, with Beattie adding two conversions, although they were unable to overhaul Walney's tally.

"We tweaked the starting 13, as we've got a lot of pace in the team, and a good pass-and-catch game," said Walney's Neil Henderson, who is joint-coach of the team along with Mike Whitehead.

"The plan was to exploit the big, wide Craven Park pitch, which I think we did at times and scored some really good tries.

"Credit to Barrow Island, they got back into it well in the second half and they pushed us all the way."

Corkhill was also chosen as one of Walney's top players by Island, along with Whitehead and Henderson, while Will Hadwen, Beattie and Hill were chosen as Island's best three players by their opponents.
