ANDY Cook is edging closer to the Barrow AFC exit door after talks with the club last night.
An AFC statement revealed the 25-goal striker has shown an inclination to play in the Football League rather than stay for a third season at Holker Street.
Cook's agent spoke with Barrow manager Paul Cox yesterday, with Cook having met both Cox and owner Paul Casson on Saturday – when an improved contract offer is thought to have been made.
The AFC statement said: “Talks are ongoing with Andy Cook and his agent in relation to a new contract at Barrow.
“Chairman Paul Casson and manager Paul Cox met the 25-goal striker after his two goals helped Barrow beat Wrexham on Saturday, when Cook indicated that his preferred option is to try to pursue a career in the Football League.
“Barrow understand and respect the striker's wishes but will maintain contact with him should such a move not materialise, as Cook has also indicated that he would not wish to move to National League club other than Barrow.
“Whatever the outcome, Barrow AFC thank Andy Cook for all his hard work at the club over the last two years and wish him all the best for the future.”
Carlisle United manager Keith Curle has already indicated his interest in bringing Cook back to the League Two club, with Hartlepool – close to the 26-year-old's home – also believed to be in the hunt for his signature.
Several National League sides have also come in for the out-of-contract front-man.
Cox has been given the go-ahead by the Barrow board to start his pursuit of several targets, with at least one striker already on his hitlist.
He is speaking with all the current AFC squad over the coming week to let them know whether they are in his plans for next season.
Joel Dixon, Jordan Williams, Danny Livesey and Andy Haworth are among those players already contracted for the 2016/17 season, along with Adhley Grimes, Neil Ashton and David Mellor – the three of whom have rarely featured under Cox.
