A team of possible future Lionesses remained ‘unbeaten’ as they went up against a number of other school teams from across Cumbria.
St Mary’s Primary School in Dalton has shared the ‘fantastic’ news that their Year Five and Six girl’s football team won the County Cup.
The girls had competed in the Barrow Schools final ran by the SGO at Furness Academy where they hit a winning streak and progressed to the county finals.
The team of nine girls travelled to Carlisle to take part in the seven-aside tournament competition.
They faced nine other teams in their league including pupils from Appleby Primary School, Stainton C of E Primary, St Michael’s C of E Primary School in Carlisle and Kingmoor Junior School in Carlisle.
St Mary’s came second in their league and made it to the semi-finals, then the final where they played Kingmoor again.
The match went to penalties and the girls scored all three of their attempts while saving one of theirs.
After bringing home the cup, the girl’s team have qualified to compete in the North Region County Schools FA Primary Cup in the North of England in March 2025.
The school, on Coronation Drive, said it was also ‘extremely’ proud of their mixed team, who also made it to the county finals.
Year Six teacher and Head of PE at the school Vicky Parkinson said: “We are extremely proud of the girls' achievement, we are incredibly grateful for all the parent support and the offers of help to train and transport the girls.
“As PE lead, myself and my colleague Mrs O'Reilly are passionate about giving children opportunities to take part in competitive and non-competitive sport as you do not know where these opportunities will take them - this is a perfect example of our girls grasping an opportunity and fulfilling their potential.”
