BARROW AFC boss Stephen Clemence is hoping his side can kick-on tomorrow following their midweek cup success.

Clemence’s side were worthy 3-0 winners in the English Football League Trophy against Aston Villa Under-21s.

The game was a dead rubber with the Bluebirds going out at this stage following previous results.

But Clemence said that didn’t change how they approached the game or the confidence they will look to take from it.

He told The Mail: “It’s obviously always nice to get back to winning ways, and I think the boys have deserved it for the efforts they have put.

“And it will be a feelgood factor for them going into this weekend (a home game against AFC Wimbledon in League Two).

Dom Telford, Theo Vassell, and Andy Dallas were on target for the Cumbrians against the Villans in a game that also saw Paul Farman play his first clash since returning from injury.

Clemence added: “It was good to see Paul out there.

“Obviously, there were a few lads out there that needed a game, but we still went pretty strong because I wanted to win the game.

“I think Aston Villa had beaten Fleetwood and drew with Bolton (in previous games in the competition.

“So they are a good academy and they have some good Under-21 players so I thought it would be a difficult game.

“But the boys’ attitude was absolutely fantastic, and they thoroughly deserved their victory.

“Now we look to build on that and take the confidence from that result into the game against Wimbledon tomorrow.

“Obviously, the league is the most important thing for us, but it doesn’t matter if it is a league game, a cup game or a friendly I want to win football games.

“And I will always try to send my teams out to do that.

“That will be what we look to do again tomorrow and hopefully this will be the start of things turning for us.

“I think this season there are a lot of tight games in this division.

“Earlier in the season we were coming out on the right side of things, and a little bit lately we have only been picking up points rather than the wins we want.

“Now we have got to try to make sure we are the team that comes out on the right side of results if we can.

“And that’s what we are all working towards.”
