CUMBRIA Taekwondo has a new British Novice champion after a young martial artist claimed gold at the British Kyorugi National Championships in Sheffield.

Elliot Fell beat his competitors in style at his first nationals by winning all three of his matches in the cadet -37kg category.

The competition, hosted at the EIS Sheffield between October 5 and October 6, is the pinnacle event of the year for the sport.

Cumbria Taekwondo, which has clubs in Barrow, Kendal and Ulverston, took 16 players to the competition and came back with a plethora of other medals.

On the first day of the event, six advanced athletes competed to be crowned British National champions in eight different categories.

Maya Stopford took the silver medal in the junior +68kg category after she won one of her two matches whilst Gabby Pettigrew also claimed silver in her cadet -29kg category.

Jack Dixon and Riley Pettigrew brought bronze medals back to South Cumbria after they finished third in the junior -59kg and junior -73kg categories.

Elsewhere, Finley Smith and Ollie McLoughlin reached the quarterfinals of their respective junior -68kg and cadet -33kg categories.

On Sunday, Lexi Pettigrew won silver in the peewee -20kg, whilst Sharon Titterington, Olivia Davies and James Jeory all took home bronze in their respective veteran +67kg, cadet +59kg and junior -48k categories.

David and William Blyth finished the tournament at the round 16 stage of the senior -80kg and peewee -30kg, which is where Oliver Coates competition came to an end in the child -29kg event.

The team was coached by coaches from the Kendal and Ulverston clubs, headed up by Chief instructor Master Kevin Thompson, Master Beverley Fallows, Sharon Titterington, Russ Clement & Steve Pettigrew.

Also attending was Cumbria Taekwondo President GM Phil James and International Referee Adam Stamp.
