BARROW 0 - 0 DERBY COUNTY

Barrow win 3-2 on penalties.

Barrow reached the Carabao Cup third round for the first time since 1968 with a famous penalty shootout success over Championship Derby County.

Paul Farman’s save from Craig Forsyth’s spot kick sparked jubilant celebration around Holker Street after Ben Jackson, Robbie Gotts and David Worrall scored past Swedish international Jacob Widell Zetterstrom.

Farman was also in top form during normal time as Stephen Clemence matched visitors making their first trip to Holker Street since 1956.

Revenge in front of 3,003 fans was certainly sweet for the home side beaten on spot kicks at Pride Park four years ago.

The Holker Street flag was flying at half-mast to remember former Bluebirds Steve Higgins and Roy McCarthy.

Derby fashioned the first chance after eight minutes as James Collins headed on top of Farman’s net from Joe Ward’s cross.

Tawanda Chirewa collected a needless yellow card for kicking the ball away after being penalised for a foul on Katia Kouyate.

Barrow grew into the contest and good work by Kouyate ended with Sam Foley driving a fierce shot from 20 yards over the bar.

And the home side gained a first corner after 26 minutes following a quick free kick to Elliot Newby, a member of the Chorley side that stunned the Rams in the FA Cup in 2021.

But it was Kouyate on the opposite flank causing more trouble for the visitors.

Seven minutes from half-time, however, Barrow almost snatched the lead. Newby’s short pass reached Garner who swivelled smartly and fired goalwards.

Keeper Widell Zetterstrom pushed the shot away for the Bluebirds’’ second corner.

But the goalie’s intervention paled into insignificance as Farman kept Barrow in the tie.

He firstly kept out Tom Barkhuizen’s close range header and then prevented Vassell scoring an own goal as the ball rebounded off the big defender.

Derby big guns Kayden Jackson and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing were among three interval substitutes.

And they linked up three minutes after the re-start with Jackson looping Mendez Laing’s cross over the crossbar.

Garner went for the spectacular from 40 yards when Liam Thompson lost possession at the top of the centre circle.

Then Garner was foiled by Zetterstrom before creating another shooting opportunity he couldn’t direct on target.

The tie was now far more open and Farman did well to keep out a curling effort from Mendez-Laing.

Derby’s fourth substitute, Dajaune Brown, came on for Thompson after 61 minutes with Clemence still to unleash his bench.

And before Emile Acquah and Kian Spence could be introduced for Garner and Telford, Jackson struck Farman’s left upright with a low shot.

Barrow though still carried a threat and Acquah brought another save from Zetterstrom via Newby’s cross.

Spence almost won it with four minutes left, curling a 20-yard free kick against the crossbar with Zetterstrom beaten.

But Barrow weren’t to be denied. James Collins fired Derby’s first penalty into the night sky, Jackson missed before Farman kept out experienced Forsyth’s effort.
