BARROW Island went down 30-18 at home to second placed Wigan St Jude’s in the Conference Second Division after trailing 30-6 at the break.

The Jude’s were bigger, faster and alert with ball in hand as they swept the Island away in the first period.

However, it was a different tale in the second half with the Wiganers failing to add to their tally.

Island got their act together in defence and ran in a further two converted tries to finish the game with confidence, but the boat had already sailed in that first period.

The Jude’s went ahead when after keeping the ball alive, scrum-half Adam Holt went over for a try converted by Danny Cassidy, son of the former Wigan, Barrow Great Britain International Mick, 0-6.

Island’s first threat came when Carl McBain tore through the Jude’s cover, but no support was on hand and the attack fizzled out.

Aide Wright then went close, but was bundled into touch on the flag.

The Jude’s doubled their tally when Cassidy prised open a gap and headed for the line only for Sam Jones to pull off a try saving tackle.

But Cassidy managed to slip the ball to Holt, who touched down for his second try of the afternoon, Cassidy adding the extra two points 0-12.

The Jude’s were getting the upper hand and were soon 18-0 up when prop Elliot Garrido crashed over for Cassidy to convert.

It was one-way traffic as Aaron Smith went over soon to be followed by Connor Parkinson, Cassidy adding the conversions 0-30.

Holt was lucky to stay on the field for an alleged headbutt on Jordan Staffieri, but not so fortunate was Josh McBain sent off for a high shot on Cassidy.

The Island closed the first half with a neat try from Aide Wright who was in like a flash from a Nathan Sneesby kick through after taking a neat pass from Max Moore, the conversion came from the boot of Jones 6-30.

This lifted the Island who came up with some great defensive work, and it was they who were to add to their tally with Carl McBain crossing the line for Jones to convert 12-30.

The Jude’s were finding it difficult to break through the Island defence, and it was the home side who rounded off a good second half with a Sneesby try and Jones goal 18-30.

Millom went down at Saddleworth 38-24, they were behind throughout and a home win saw the Oldham side leapfrog the Woolybacks who drop to second bottom.

Tries came from Kyle Evans, Tom Askew, Evan Jackson, Kian McPherson and Rio McQuiston with two goals from Jack Newbiggin.

In the NWML Ulverston’s game with Burtonwood Bridge was called off due to the visitors failing to raise enough players. Ulverston take on Division One leaders Dalton at Dragley Beck tomorrow kick-off 7pm.
