BARROW AFC head coach Stephen Clemence says his side will get better after their 5-0 defeat away to Kilmarnock on Friday night.

Speaking after the game, the Bluebirds boss didn’t try to sugar-coat things, but was determined to use the game to learn lessons.

Speaking to the club’s official Youtube channel, he said: “We’ve got more games to play, and we will get better, we’ll improve on that, I’ve got no doubt about it.

“Obviously we’re disappointed to get beat 5-0 off anybody whether it’s pre-season or not.

“It’s not something we want to happen. We are 1-0 down at half-time to a set-play from a wide free-kick.

“The game was very even up to that point, and we had a couple of opportunities ourselves which we didn’t manage to put away.”

Clemence felt his side were founding wanting a little bit in the second half, against a Kilmarnock side who play in the Europa League tomorrow night.

He added: “I think you could see in the second half that Kilmarnock were ahead of us as far as in pre-season, so yeah, I don’t want to get beat five, but I can understand the reasons why.

“We’ve obviously changed the team around a bit, we’ve also got some trialists on the pitch, who probably aren’t up to speed and haven’t done enough training, so we were left a little bit short in the end.”

Clemence, his backroom staff and the players will review the action from Rugby Park during this week.

And he feels there will be things that come from the review which help going forward.

He said: “There’s plenty to learn, I know that and you’d rather that result happen now than in a couple of weeks time.

“You are learning about people all the time and I’ve certainly learnt a lot (against Kilmarnock).”

Clemence believes that the Bluebirds were the architects of their own downfall rather than the Scottish Premier League side being too hot to handle.

He explained: “I think we made some basic errors, and you can make those errors when you are tired.

“I thought we did really well in the first half. I said to the boys going out in the second half ‘right you are going again now. This is the first time we’ve asked you to go further, now let’s make sure we start the second half well’.

“Unfortunately, like five minutes later we are 3-0 down, so that obviously didn’t go to plan.

“But it is what it is. We are in pre-season, the majority have played 60 minutes, some have played a little bit longer so that’s good to get minutes in the tank.”
