A SPORTY student has broken a 41-year-old school record.

A Year Nine pupil at Dowdales School has broken the long-standing record for the greatest distance of throwing a shotput.

Leo has set a new school record after he managed to throw the shotput 11 meters and 86 centimetres (38.9 feet).

He beat the previous record of 11 meters and 43 centimetres (37.5 feet), which was set in 1983.

Dave Clinton, the previous record holder, visited the school to meet Leo and present him with a certificate of his achievement.

Leo said he felt 'very proud' to have broken the school record, especially as it has been held for so many years.

He also really enjoyed meeting the previous record holder and said it was a special moment.
