IT was a day to remember for a youngster who won two events in a local wrestling competition.
John-Lukas Stainton, 11, who attends Settlebeck High School in Sedbergh, came first in the eight stone and 11 ½ stone categories at Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling Association’s (CWWA) event at Ambleside Sports.
The 11-year-old who grew up with wrestling deep-rooted in his family, was also awarded the Guiness Trophy for the best performance of the day by CWWA President, Chris Bland.
“I’m very proud of coming first in the two categories,” John-Lukas said. “I also got a third place in the under 15 years and a fourth in the under 12 years.
“I’ve been wrestling since I was two. I’ve been brought up with it. My passion comes from my family. My uncle is a 14-stone champion and my Mum used to wrestle too.”
John-Lukas trains every day at home and every Friday night at Burnside Cricket Cub at Kendal Academy.
His Mum, Glenis Stainton was so proud of her son’s achievements.
She said: “He just never gives up, I’m so proud of him. I’m not bothered about how well he does though, I just want him to enjoy it. I think of it as a gentleman’s sport – you shake hands before and you shake hands afterwards.
“We all go and compete in wrestling shows around Cumbria, Northumberland and Lancashire. We don’t go on holidays, we go wrestling instead!”
