Thousands of golf fans will be within striking distance of Cumbria’s many stunning courses when they converge on Royal Liverpool for next month’s Open Championship.

There are around 40 to choose from, in some of the most beautiful surroundings you could imagine.
Carus Green Golf Club, near Kendal, benefits from a beautiful location and is gaining a reputation for being one of northern England’s best courses. It also has great practice facilities and its clubhouse includes a contemporary bar and restaurant with terraces overlooking the 18th green.
When you play Casterton Golf Course in the Lune Valley near Kirkby Lonsdale you have views of the Yorkshire Dales, the Lakeland Fells and the Lancashire Coast. The course welcomes all players and likes to encourage family golf. You can also enjoy other family friendly activities like footgolf and rugby golf.
Cumbria also lays claim to the highest course in England. At 1,476 feet Alston Moor Golf Club is in the surroundings of the North Pennine Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Silloth on Solway Golf Course is regarded as one of the finest links courses in England. It’s a great challenge for any golfer with undulating fairways and tight greens.
Further down the coastline is Seascale Golf Club which is said to ooze quality, class and character. It offers views of the Isle of Man and Scotland to the west and the mountains of the Lake District to the east.
Still further down the coast is Silecroft Golf Club which offers a 9-hole, 18 tee links golf challenge. You can stand on the first tee and gaze across the Irish Sea.
Carlisle Golf Club is a mature parkland course and then there’s the nearby heathland course at Brampton, situated right next to lovely Talkin Tarn.
Cockermouth Golf Club has such a wonderful setting you’ll not mind if you bash the ball into the bunker. And the greens of Keswick Golf Club have some of the loveliest backdrops – the peaks of Blencathra, Skiddaw and the Helvellyn Range.
The tree-lined course of Ulverston Golf Club is said to be one of the prettiest the county has to offer.
