AFTER a pandemic-related three-year hiatus, a running club's road races are back with a bang.
On a perfect Wednesday evening, runners of all ages from across the South Lakes came together for a fantastic evening of running with Hoad Hill Harriers.
The evening started with the one-mile fun run around the sports field at GSK S&S club. There was palpable excitement as the 53 youngsters stood at the start line waiting for the hooter to sound.
Oliver Oldham from Leven Valley crossed the line in a convincing winning time of 5:16, followed by a close finish from Noah Cook and Robert Pike (Leven Valley) in 5:35 and 5:37. First girl was Ellen Douglas also from Leven Valley in 6:23.
Next up was the 10k, which saw 128 runners take on the first of Hoad Hill Harriers' popular road races.
Within a mile, Leven Valley AC runner, Harry Stainton led the pack ahead of 2019 winner Ross Campbell, gradually extending his lead along the coast road. Harry kept up a blistering pace and as he entered the sports field, he had almost a minute’s lead over his nearest rival, winning the race in 33:48.
The chasing pack was led by Ross Campbell (Barrow in Furness Striders), who finished in 2nd in 34:43.
Fantastic running from first female, Kate Maltby from Bristol & West AC, saw her coming in 3rd overall in 35:02 and almost 2 minutes ahead of her nearest rival.
A spokeswoman for the club said: "It was great to see so many youngsters out enjoying running and playing in the newly reopened play area at the Glaxo club – well done to everyone.
"Some great times and performances were topped off by a beautiful sunset and rainbow celebrating our town’s return to road racing and fun runs.
