Barrow 32
Workington 18
Barrow came from behind to go through to round six of the Challenge Cup after seeing off the challenge of a determined Town side.
Barrow went into the tie following their 34-24 victory at Widnes last weekend while Town were smarting from a hefty 54-4 home defeat to Sheffield. However if people thought that would mean Barrow putting on a demolition job on the West Cumbrians, that wasn’t the case.
The Raiders were up and running within three minutes, and from their first raid Jarrod Sammut crashed into the posts when trying to cross the line. From the play the ball Carl Forster fed Tom Hopkins who dotted the ball over the line for Sammut to convert 6-0.
Town almost responded with Barrow boy Perry Singleton being held a foot short of the line.
On 20 minutes it was level pegging, Jamie Doran chipping ahead and in for the try was Connor Fitzsimons, the conversion from Carl Forber making it 6-6.
Then it all went wrong for the Raiders. Substitute Nathan Mossop, just on the field, took Lee Postlethwaite with a high shot and was sin-binned.
Town took advantage after Danny Morrow lost the ball on half way.Town set up a raid and the wily Doran split the defence wide open to race over, Forber adding the goal 6-12.
And while down to 12 men, Doran put in a great 40-20 kick gaining possession from where Evan Simons sent John Hutchings over the line, Forber obliging with the goal 6-18.
Barrow were out of sorts and looking down the barrel with the next score vital and as the half-time hooter was about to blow Barrow reduced the deficit. Smart play from Mossop, Dan Toal and Morrow paved the way for Johnston to crash over, Sammut adding the goal 12-18.
Morrow was penalised early in the second half and from the tap penalty Fitzsimmons was almost in for a try but he lost possession.
On 54 minutes Sammut set up a raid only for Town to go offside and from a quick tap, Mossop went down the short side for Stack to crash over. Sammut failed to convert – 16-18 and game on.
Barrow were gaining control defending strongly with Luke Creswell outstanding and well led in attack by Forster and Shane Toal.
And it was former Town man Sammut who was to put the home side ahead selling an outrageous dummy to glide through and score. He also added the goal, 22-18.
Town were now flagging as Barrow got the upper hand to increase their lead with Sammut’s long ball finding Miloudi who sent Ritson in at the corner 26-18.
And to round off the scoring in which Barrow scored 26 unanswered points a great movement involving Shane Toal, Johnson, Creswell and Iaria resulted in Sammut touching down and converting.
The 6th round draw involving Super League clubs takes place tonight at the Bradford/Leigh game.
