South Walney Junior School made it back-to-back Premier Division titles last Thursday with a series of impressive displays, as five wins from five games gave them the trophy.
With Georgia Stanway playing a part as England progressed to the Women’s World Cup semi-finals later in the evening, the Furness area’s latest up-and-coming talent were out in force in scorching conditions at Pulse Soccer.
In the first round of fixtures played four weeks back, South Walney were unstoppable, where an 8-0 win over Dane Ghyll was followed up by a 5-0 victory over Newbarns.
Their first contest of the second round saw them face off with Greengate, who themselves were also two wins from two, beating St Pauls 7-0 and Newbarns 1-0.
The second result meant they now just had to win out to confirm a successful title defence and they made no mistake, as they overcame St Pauls 3-0 and Cambridge 4-0.
Greengate wrapped up the runners-up spot by defeating Dane Ghyll and Cambridge in their remaining games.
Newbarns bounced back from their heavy South Walney loss by going unbeaten on the day with a 3-0 win over a Cambridge outfit that showed outstanding determination in playing five matches on the bounce, having missed the first week, before drawing 0-0 with St Pauls.
The day wrapped another successful season for schools girls’ football with the number of participating girls continuing to increase, and Pulse duty manager Natasha Pearson, who is studying for her UEFA B licence, is excited by the rise in numbers.
She said: “It’s great to see so many young girls enjoying the game.
he rise of women’s football is brilliant, with the Lionesses playing so well in the World Cup, it’s encouraging to see the amount of role models the girls have.”
