VICTORIA Academy under-11s came out on top after producing a series of impressive displays to come out on top of 15 other local schools.
A fully-deserved triumph saw them boast a perfect record throughout the entire tournament held at Pulse Soccer, with three wins from three in the group stage followed by semi-final and final victories over Roose and Barrow Island respectively.
With only group winners qualifying the pressure was on, but a 2-0 defeat of St George’s, followed by a 1-0 victory against Holy Family and a 3-1 success over Greengate sealed their progression to the semi-final where they would face Roose.
Roose themselves had qualified with a game to spare thanks to comfortable wins over St Columbas and South Walney, with a loss to St James in their final match proving irrelevant.
And they gave a very good account of themselves against an in-form Victoria outfit, but Victoria proved slightly too strong.
A hard-fought 1-0 win put them into the final against Barrow Island, who had come through a group containing Yarlside, Dane Ghyll and Ormsgill.
Island faced Chetwynde in their semi and a thrilling contest looked like it was going to penalties, with both sides missing chances in an end to end game.
However, a last-minute strike booked Barrow Island’s final spot.
The final itself was also a close affair, but Victoria got a grip of the game and seemingly had it wrapped up when they went 3-1 ahead.
Barrow Island pulled a goal back with a minute remaining though to keep themselves in with a chance.
That was as good as it got for them, however, as Victoria held on for the win.
