A HAVERIGG prisoner had to be rushed to hospital after an inmate struck him on the back of the head with a metal bar.

Richard Freeman attacked Stephen Logan with a metal bar as they were getting ready to leave a motor vehicle workshop at HMP Haverigg on March 4.

Furness Magistrates' Court, in Barrow heard that a prison officer said the sound of the bar hitting the victim was "a really sickening thud" and he did not know how Logan "remained stood up".

Prosecutor, Mr Lee Dacre, said the team at the prison could not stem the bleeding to the gash at the back of Logan's head and he was taken to Furness General Hospital.

Medics at FGH, in Barrow, used four staples to close the wound.

Mr Dacre said: "At about 11.20am they were queuing up to leave the motor vehicle workshop and Freeman stuck him (Logan) to the rear of his head with a metal bar.

"It was a substantial metal bar."

Reading Logan's interview statement, Mr Dacre told he court: "He (Freeman) looked like he wanted to kill me.

"I have never had any conversation with him before. I have no idea why he assaulted me."

Freeman, 27, appeared via a video link from Preston Prison to the Barrow court on Thursday.

The defendant pleaded guilty to actual bodily harm.

Magistrates committed the case to crown court and requested a pre sentence the report be ready for the next hearing.

The case is due to be heard at Preston Crown Court on September 2

Freeman was remanded in custody.
