The #SpiritofCumbria hashtag on Twitter has prompted hundreds of offers of help and support for flood victims, including from the company Nilaqua which heard about water shortages in the county, and offered its products as a solution.
Nilaqua spokesman Jasmine Parsons said: “Storm Desmond has been so devastating for the region, especially for those who are more vulnerable.
“We work with the NHS, and the Nilaqua products give the elderly an opportunity to wash and care for themselves more easily.”
It’s not just Nilaqua which is offering help from further afield. On the Spirit of Cumbria forum there have been more than 90 messages from people across the country volunteering their time to help flood victims, with one user from Portsmouth even inviting people to stay at his house over the Christmas period.
Businesses have been lending a hand, with Morrisons and Asda providing supplies, and the Carillion contracting team at Sellafield offering help and machinery to anyone who needs “to clean up, clear out, remove large amounts of debris, etc”.
