FIRE crews were called to an incident at a former industrial site in Barrow.
Firefighters responded to reports of a blaze in a derelict building at Salthouse Mills around 3.45pm this afternoon.
On arrival, crew members discovered it was tipped rubbish consisting of car tyres and household waste giving out thick, black smoke.
It took 45 minutes for firefighters from Barrow and Walney crews to extinguish the blaze.
Cumbria Fire and Rescue would like to remind people that flytipping is an offence, especially when it is set alight.
Crew members say it is a waste of their valuable time which could keep them from more serious incidents.
