A MAN has been jailed for sexually assaulting a young woman in a Barrow nightclub.
Irfan Gilgil, aged 30, of no fixed abode, was sentenced to two years in prison yesterday at Preston Crown Court.
He had pleaded not guilty to the offence but was convicted after a trial. He communicated to the court through a Turkish interpreter.
The assault occurred on Sunday September 11 of last year at approximately 3.30am, within Manhattans nightclub, Cavendish Street.
Gilgil forced himself on the woman, aged in her mid-20s, and sexually assaulted her inside the club.
The victim was able to get away and report what had happened to security staff. Gilgil was quickly located and handed over to police who arrested him.
Detective Inspector Helen Curme said: “We are pleased that Irfan Gilgil has been brought to justice for his despicable actions.
“He was a stranger to his victim and forced himself upon her in what must have been a terrifying incident.
“I would like to praise the victim in this case for her bravery and her assistance in helping us bring her attacker to justice.
“I’d also like to thank the work done by the security staff at Manhattans who acted quickly in alerting police and tracing Gilgil within the nightclub.”
