The Windermere Marathon is set to become part of the Great Run series.
The Great Run Company, known for its Great Run series, has announced the inclusion of the Windermere Marathon in its road running portfolio.
First held in 1982, the Windermere Marathon follows an anticlockwise route around Lake Windermere, passing through Hawkshead, Newby Bridge, and Bowness-on-Windermere.
The course will broadly remain the same.
The Windermere Marathon will take place on June 15, 2025, as part of the Arla Great North Swim event, which draws 8,000 swimmers annually.
The Great Run Company already operates in the Lake District, hosting both the Arla Great North Swim and the 13 Valleys Ultra events.
Colin Murphy, Great Run race director for the Windermere Marathon, said: "The Great Run Company is delighted to have inherited the Windermere Marathon from Brathay Trust.
"We are lucky to have the opportunity to keep such a historic event going, and to continue to raise important funds and fitness in the local community."
Paul Foster, chief executive of the Great Run Company, said: "We are already working hard to deliver a landmark event, during a weekend where Great Run operates in the Lake District, as part of our much-loved Great North Swim event, and we are pleased to be able to inform runners that they can once again run a marathon on the same course in Windermere in 2025.
"This will allow us to continue to work closely with the local community and those who have taken part in Windermere Marathon before and attract new participants to this beautiful event.
"It’s important to us to also be able to help Brathay Trust continue their incredible fundraising, and I’m pleased they are the lead charity partner for the Windermere Marathon 2025."
Entries for the 2025 Windermere Marathon are now open.
