BAE Systems has lodged plans to create a more ‘welcoming’ environment and ensure ‘necessary’ security measures are in place between two educational buildings in Barrow.
The defence giants have submitted proposals for a scheme known as ‘UoC Security Enhancement Project’ to Westmorland and Furness Council.
The project is proposed to cover the area between the Submarine Academy of Skills and Knowledge (SASK) and the under-construction University of Cumbria building on Barrow Island.
Planning documents state: “The ‘UoC Security Enhancement Project’ aims to improve this area in between the SASK and UoC building, creating a more welcoming environment through landscaping and introducing a better flow of movement for the public to walk through within the site while ensuring that the necessary security measures are in place to protect BAE property.”
According to the design and access statement, the project involves a number of different aspects including:
- Demolishing the existing Crossfields Gate 10 entrance gates, barrier and turnstiles
- Relocating the existing SASK main entrance by demolishing the existing and relocating it to the east side of the building.
- Installing new fences, gates, and provide security-controlled access points (such as pedestrian turnstiles and vehicle barriers)
- Positioning guarded welfare cabins at key access points to monitor and control entry, ensuring only authorised personnel can access the BAE site.
- Replacing high, rigid fences with designs that maintain security but create a more welcoming environment.
- Extending the SASK building to house a security office which will process security passes and ensure those entering BAE property have been cleared.
- Installing new lighting to enhance visibility and safety while maintaining a pleasing atmosphere.
The statement adds: “The security enhancements should create a secure facility that meets the current standards set by BAE Systems and its partner agencies. The plan should include passive security measures, ensuring the building is approachable yet safe.”
This planning application is under consideration by Westmorland and Furness Council.
