A multi-agency investigation remains underway to discover the cause of a fire at Barrow's BAE systems.

Smoke and 'bright flashes' engulfed the skies around the shipyard in the early hours of Wednesday, October 30.

Residents near the site were told to stay in their homes just after the blaze broke out around 1am.

Dozens of firefighters battled the flames inside Devonshire Dock Hall for around 12 hours as black smoke billowed into the air while alarms sounded.

The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) is the UK’s independent nuclear regulator and aims to protect society by securing safe nuclear operations.

The body has legal authority to regulate nuclear safety, nuclear security and conventional health and safety.

A spokesman for the ONR said: "We are continuing to pursue regulatory enquiries into the incident. A multi-agency investigation involving police and other agencies remains ongoing."

BAE Systems is a global defence company that develops, manufactures, and supports products and systems for defence, aerospace and security.

The UK’s new multi-billion-pound Dreadnought and Astute submarines are currently being built at Barrow.
