NEW measures have been introduced to improve road safety outside a Barrow school.
Westmorland and Furness Council has introduced traffic calming measures outside a St Pius X Catholic Primary School on Schneider Road in Barrow.
Teachers and parents at St Pius X Catholic Primary School raised concerns of speeding and drivers failing to slow down, endangering children whilst crossing the road.
The council’s Traffic Management Team worked with teaching staff to improve the road markings.
This aims to influence driver behaviour by reducing speed and highlighting the crossing area.
On approaching the school entrance, a number of new elements have been installed, working in both directions.
St Pius now boasts a flashing, warning light at both approaches to the entrance, markings reading ‘SLOW’ in a highlighted red box surrounded by four red strips as well as a red, textured road centre with zig zag lines in between the zebra crossing.
Westmorland and Furness Council said that since the introduction of the scheme, Headteacher Kevin McGoldrick has shared that the measures have been very effective and the school is pleased with the results.
“Road safety is one of our top priorities and we are committed to making our network safer, ensuring that our area remains a fantastic place to live, work, and visit,” the council said.
