A LIVE music venue in Barrow has received an award for its contribution towards grassroots music.

Barrow Underground Music Society (BUMS) was one of 850 venues in the country to receive a Music Venue Trust (MVT) Outstanding Contribution to Grassroots Music Award at the Woolwich Works in London.

The one-day event, which has been held annually since 2014, is a chance for all grassroots music venues to network and find support with various issues and ideas to help continue to run the respective venues.

It is the largest gathering of grassroots music venue professionals in the world and represents the single biggest opportunity to engage with the sector as it is designed specifically for members of the Music Venues Alliance.

The society has worked with MVT for many years with their team working tirelessly to support, protect, secure and improve UK grassroots music venues for communities and emerging artists.

“We are proud to be representing Barrow and having the opportunity to be friends with so many hard-working venues across the country,” said Rob Dunphy, from the society.

“We are very proud of the opportunities our space gives to local bands and artists and creatives. This year we have seen more variety in the types of events that are held here and that is definitely going to continue in the future.

“We would not exist without our awesome team of volunteers that make sure we stay open.”

Earlier this year, they were nominated in the Music Weeks Top Ten Grassroots Music Venues in the UK.

Mr Dunphy added: “We plan on continuing to move forward with exciting new music, bands, DJ’s and artists.

“Next year is already looking really exciting with more art exhibitions, poetry and art craft fairs to compliment our solid reputation as an established and respected Grass Roots Music Venue.”
