Photographs taken at the only surviving seaside lido in the North West show how its restoration is coming along.
The first phase of the £6.8million Grange Lido restoration project, which started in April last year, was to retain and restore the buildings on the site.
The scope of the Westmorland and Furness Council scheme included external and internal repairs and upgrading work to all the buildings, including concrete repairs and rebuilding work.
This phase also includes constructing boundary walls, ramps, footpaths, and retaining walls, installing a new water main and preparing for a new electrical supply, drainage work for the pool and cleaning the parapet walls.
The project hopes to protect the derelict Grade II-listed site’s immense social and cultural heritage in a way that does not preclude the option of bringing the pool back into use sometime in the future.
Volunteers have worked to raise funds to restore the open-air 50m sea-water swimming pool located at the Thornfield Road site.
The art deco pool, which opened in the 1930s, was originally closed in the 1990s.
These funds were added to The National Lottery and Architectural Heritage Funds which were match-funded, meaning every pound given becomes two.
Sufficient funds were not raised in time to follow on with the reinstatement of the pool and the site had to be made safe for public access.
This meant a temporary infill for the pool was created with 2,000 tonnes of stone which the council says is removable and suitable for future recycling.
Save Grange Lido CBS is in talks with the council and hopes to sign a lease on the property to raise the funds needed and go into the next phase of development, however, nothing has been agreed yet.
A specific use for the buildings has not yet been determined.
