Dalton with Newton Deputy Mayor Ann Thurlow is the most recent local dignitary to sign up to sponsored a sleep-out to raise funds for a homeless charity - with organisers having a final push for volunteers.

Forty Winks 4 Furness is holding its annual sleep-out at Barrow AFC's SO Legal stadium at the end of the month to raise awareness and funds for Furness Homeless Support Group.

Councillor Paul Griffiths said that following the success of last year's event, which raised £14k for the charity, the Furness public has once again stepped up to support the worthy cause.

So far, they have raised more than £2,000.

Cllr Griffiths said: "I'm pleased to see that we have around 50 people currently signed up to sleep-out and our guest list includes Barrow and Furness MP Michelle Scrogham, Ulverston Mayor Graham Scrogham and Dalton Deputy Mayor Ann Thurlow."

The event, on November 30, starts at 8pm with free refreshments provided plus musical entertainment until 'bedtime'.

There will also be free breakfast buns served in the morning before everyone leaves.

He said: "I believe it's important to raise awareness because, here in Furness, it's easy to think there isn't really a problem with homelessness as we don't see so many people on the streets.

"However, that is largely thanks to the hard work of organisations such as the Furness Homeless Support group who take people in need, place them in temporary accommodations and help overcome barriers that prevent a move into full time accommodation.

"It could be a loss of a job, the death of a partner, the breakdown of a relationship, or many other reasons, that mean they can no longer afford to keep a roof over their head.

"Furness Homeless Support Group have been providing support for Furness families and individuals since 1989 and often, all of their temporary accommodations are full."
