A lorry had to be recovered in Barrow yesterday evening (November 13) after it struck a railway bridge.

The ten-wheel artic lorry tried to pass through the 14ft 3" structure which is considered to be a low bridge. 

In the UK, the minimum clearance for public highways is 16ft 6 inches so low bridges are marked with signs.

The collision happened at the railway bridge at Salthouse Road near its junction with Roose Road (A5087).

One driver reported the vehicle underneath the bridge at 6.45pm and was back out from by 9pm.

A spokesperson for Cumbria police said: "We received a report of a lorry having struck the bridge however, it appears it was not wedged.

"Network Rail was informed and the driver was reported and received a Traffic Offence Report.

The lorry was moved off the road so it was not causing an obstruction prior to it being recovered."

A number of lorries and wagons have occurred over the last tens years with HGV drivers urged to check the height of their vehicles.

A spokesperson for Network Rail said: "The incident was reported at 18:40 yesterday and the train was suspended.

"Our Mobile Operations Manager attended to the train and services resumed at 1855."
