A Lake District school will bid goodbye to a beloved music teacher with a final theatrical performance next month.
Windermere School has announced that its annual theatrical performance for 2024 will be Fiddler on the Roof.
This year’s production is especially meaningful as it will be the last directed by the beloved Head of Music Janet McCallum Hartley who is retiring at the end of this academic year after an incredible 41 years of dedicated service.
A Windermere School spokesman said: "She has been an integral part of the Windermere School community, beginning her journey here as a music teacher before becoming both the Head of Music and a Houseparent in the Sixth Form boarding house. Her commitment to nurturing talent and her passion for music and theatre have enriched Windermere School and left a lasting legacy."
Over the years, Mrs McCallum Hartley has brought to life many unforgettable productions, including The Adams Family, Legally Blonde, and Hairspray. This year’s choice, Fiddler on the Roof, holds special significance as it has long been her favourite musical, chosen as a heartfelt tribute to her career and contributions.
The spokesman added: "In preparation for this extraordinary performance, the cast and crew have been working tirelessly, with rehearsals already in full swing. We were delighted to welcome back the incredible West End choreographer, Mr Ashley Johnson, who has been guiding pupils through the difficult dances of the production. The pupils also recently performed a sneak preview of some of the Fiddler on the Roof songs at a special concert at Jesus Church, Troutbeck, showcasing the talent and energy that will be on full display come December.
"This production promises to be an unforgettable experience and a true celebration of Mrs McCallum Hartley’s time at Windermere. We warmly invite the local community to join us for this special event as we celebrate our talented pupils and send Mrs McCallum Hartley off with the joy she deserves."
The play will be performed at 7pm on December 5, 6 and 7 at Crampton Hall, Windermere School, Browhead Campus, LA23 1NW.
Tickets cost £10 and are available here.
