BAE Systems has lodged plans to build a temporary drug and alcohol test centre in Barrow.

The defence giants have submitted a planning application to Westmorland and Furness Council to install a single storey Portakabin building in the car park to the back of Waterside House.

According to planning documents, BAE have applied for temporary planning permission lasting two years.

The design and access statement says: “BAE Systems are in need of space which can be used as a drug and alcohol test centre.”

Planning documents say the prefabricated nature of the buildings results in ‘minimal impact’ on the environment in terms of both construction and use.

The design and access statement concludes: “The Portakabin building was chosen as a result of the flexible solution it provides.

“It can be installed quickly enabling BAE Systems to begin using the specifically fitted out building much more quickly than a traditional build, and it can easily be removed from site with little impact on the ground.”

This planning application is undergoing public consultation.
