An annual festive event in Furness has been saved after the parish council got involved.

It was previously said in October that the Askam and Ireleth events committee would no longer be able to organise the Christmas Tree light switch-on event.

The festivities will now take place on Saturday, November 30 from 4.30pm thanks to Askam and Ireleth Parish Council, the Platform One cafe, and Councillor Ben Shirley.

Janice Cumming, clerk for the parish council, said: "It was with great sadness to hear that the Askam and Ireleth events committee do not feel able to organise the Christmas tree light switch on this year.

"I am sure everyone would wish to thank them for their hard work organising events for the village for many years and giving us such happy memories of carnivals, gals, Christmas and so many other events.

"The parish council will supply a Christmas tree and lights for the memorial garden."

The Christmas lights are expected to be turned on at around 6pm on the night, acting as the centrepiece for an evening full of entertainment.

This will include carols from the Askam Town Silver Band and a parade with Santa Claus himself, travelling from Platform One to the Memorial Garden in time for the big switch-on.

There will also be mulled wine, hot chocolate, mince pies and many other 'delights' to ensure that the crowds are well looked after during the spectacle.

Councillor Shirley added: "Thank you to everyone involved with the events committee over the years.

"Committees like this work tirelessly to raise funds, carry out lots of admin and planning to deliver much-loved community events for Askam and Ireleth - thank you all."

The Platform One cafe can be found on Duddon Road and will act as the main hub of the event before the parade takes off.
