A new film has been produced that recalls the history of submarines built in Barrow's shipyard.

The 35-minute documentary, A Barrow-Built Submarine Story, chronicles significant moments in Barrow's submarine history, from the Nordenfelts and Hollands to the Astute-class submarines and the AUKUS programme.

The film, available on YouTube, features historic archive footage and photographs, accompanied by music and poetic narration.

John Rennie, the film's creator, said: "I've been blown away by the amount of views and positive reviews the film has received already.

“In the process of researching for the film two things became very apparent.

"The first thing was that this film absolutely had to be made.

"There are a few books that map out the timeline of the development of Barrow-built submarines and many separate clips that capture the significant moments, but this film is the first time the historical timeline has been brought together in one video."

John Rennie Creative Media was commissioned by the Westmorland and Furness Council to make two films for The Dock Museum's new Shipyard Town Gallery funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and BAE Systems.

The second film, titled Life On a Submarine, describes life on a nuclear submarine through the experiences of four ex-Royal Navy submariners, including former commodore of the Submarine Service, Jim Perks CBE.

Both films have been viewed more than 38,000 times since being released online two weeks ago.
