A group in Barrow has received funding worth over £30,000 as they look to create a new music hub for the town.

The North West Music Academy (NWMA) shared over the weekend that they had been successful in their application for financial backing.

This has come about through Westmorland and Furness Council via the United Kingdom Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) as part of the Thrive with Arts, Culture & Heritage Programme.

Thanks to the scheme, the NWMA will now be able to draw upon an extra £34,500 as they ramp up plans to create the new centre at the heart of Barrow.

A spokesperson from the academy said: "Following a detailed and successful application we are delighted to have been awarded a grant of £34,500.

"The funding supports the development of our Performance Hall, establishing NWMA as a venue for live music of all genres in the heart of Barrow.

"Work started this week and we can't wait to invite you in to see the final results."

The NWMA moved into the Ramsden Square Building in February last year, using it to host workshops, short courses and year-round courses.

Using the historic building as a base, the organisation is hoping to create a dedicated centre for music education and performance, which will go hand-in-hand with special one-off events.

One of the first shows to be hosted by the Performance Hall next year is set to be 'The Songs of Stuart Adamson', which will see a 'stellar' line-up of musicians take on beloved tracks from the founding member of Big Country.

It is not the first time that the NWMA has been successful in claiming financial support, having been one of seven groups to be given £1000 by Jazz North.

That bursary will be used to create a micro-festival promoting talent in the local area, as well as contributing to the continued refurbishment of the centre.
