A hospice in south Cumbria is going through a 'vital' refurbishment to help it deal with 'mounting pressure'.

St Mary's Hospice of Ulverston is currently planning a grand reopening in 2025 once the final aspects of the work are completed.

In 2021 the charity initiated a comprehensive consultation process, gathering valuable feedback from staff, patients, visitors, and health professionals to better understand how they could enhance the privacy, dignity, and overall experience of those who come to St Mary’s.

This feedback was said to be instrumental in shaping the design of the new and improved hospice environment.

Alison Alger, philanthropic manager at St Mary’s, said: “We are truly excited to welcome the community into our newly refurbished hospice.

“This transformation wouldn’t be possible without the incredible support of our funders and local businesses, and we look forward to seeing how these new spaces will enhance the experience for everyone who comes through our doors.”

Thanks to the support of the UK construction industry charity CRASH, along with contributions from local and national funders, the 'ambitious' refurbishment is on track to create a more functional, comfortable, and compassionate space for all.

The refurbishment project, which has taken two years to secure funding and design, includes several significant upgrades:

  • The completely redesigned main reception will provide a 'warm and inviting' atmosphere for patients, families, and visitors.

  • A new private entrance is being constructed to offer patients a dignified and comfortable arrival, away from the busy main reception.

  • A dedicated family room will be introduced, along with private quiet rooms, to give loved ones a peaceful space for reflection and important conversations.

  • The project will also deliver new staff facilities, including a tranquil staffroom and a video conferencing room, enabling the team to recharge and collaborate effectively.

  • Additional storage space for medical supplies will streamline operations, ensuring care teams have immediate access to essential resources.

The refurbishment has been made possible by the generosity of local and national funders, including: the Bernard Sunley Foundation, The Barrow Thornborrow Charity, CRASH, Cumbria Community Foundation Papagalino Fund, The Frieda Scott Trust, Garfield Weston Foundation, Underbarrow Marrow Day Committee, and Ulverston Town Council.
