A COUNCILLOR said he was 'very pleased' to see 20mph signs up in Ulverston.
Westmorland and Furness Council installed the signs after it approved measures to lower the speed limit in busy areas such as Market Place, New Market Street, Daltongate and Fountain Street, among others in the centre.
Mark Wilson, the leader of Ulverston Town Council, said the signs going up were in response to public campaigning and the efforts of the town councillors.
He said: "I hope next year the rest of suburban Ulverston can also benefit from safer roads and less pollution from exhausts."
Before the measure was improved in April, a report prepared for a council meeting stated: "Introduction of 20mph have shown to make streets safer by reducing speeds and enabling an equitable use of the road space for all users, encourage residents to walk and cycle by reducing speeds, bring health benefits both physical and mental and reduce noise pollution by amending the way vehicles accelerate/decelerate."
The proposals received one objection, which said Ulverston town centre was a 'natural speed reduction area' due to its shape and size.
The scheme was funded through a private works agreement with the town council.
