BENCHES installed as part of a new 'pocket park' in a Cumbrian town have been vandalised.

The two benches were part of a resurfaced area at Rusland Drive, Dalton, that was previously a children's play area, but its aging equipment had been assessed as 'having issues'.

After consultation with residents, Dalton with Newton Town Council created a new 'pocket park' in January of this year with two picnic benches, one with wheelchair access, and nine planters all made from 100% recycled plastic complete with seasonal plants.

The Town Council was hoping it would be a well-used area that would be used for picnics and is safe for children as the area is fenced.

It was discovered earlier today (October 16) however that the benches had been vandalised .

Speaking on its Facebook page, a council spokesperson said: "It is truly disheartening to see that our newly installed picnic benches at Rusland Drive have been vandalised with graffiti.

"These benches are here for everyone to enjoy, providing a space to relax, gather, appreciate the outdoors and take in the beautiful view of Dalton. Acts like this don't just damage property they damage the sense of community we all work hard to build.

"Let's show pride in our town by respecting and taking care of our public spaces. If you see anything, please report it. Let's work together to keep our town beautiful."
