A new gym which will be open 24 hours a day could be coming to south Cumbria.

Westmorland and Furness Council has approved a planning application from Cox Motor Group to convert part of a ‘redundant’ former car workshop off Queen Katherine’s Avenue into a Puregym.

The proposed gym plans on opening for 24 hours per day, seven days a week.

According to planning documents the proposed gym will have 23 parking spaces and ten bike parking spaces.

This comes after the front part of the building recently opened as a Greggs.

The site would be accessed from Queen Katherine’s Avenue and a via a new pedestrian access from Appleby Road that was formed as part of the Greggs approval.

In April Puregym announced that it was planning to keep expanding after opening 40 new gyms over the past year across the UK.

The leisure brand revealed that revenues grew 15 per cent in 2023 compared with the previous year to £549 million, and that it saw an 11 per cent increase in membership across the business.

This planning application was approved on October 11.
