A MUSICIAN is taking action to support homeless people.
Kelly Griffiths will join dozens of local people in sleeping outside under the stands at Barrow AFC to get close to some of the harsh realities of being homeless.
She is taking part in a charity event organised by Forty Winks 4 Furness, which was created to raise money for Furness Homeless Support Group.
On November 30, there will be food and refreshments as well as some entertainment from local musicians and bands, before the volunteers settle down for a night under the stars.
“We are fortunate that after we sleep out for one night we will go back to our own beds,” Kelly said.
“This is a luxury that we take for granted and is something everyone should have. Unfortunately, many people don't have this.”
Last year around 35 people slept outside through a harsh storm and successfully raised almost £14,000.
“This year we want to show that at the end of a storm there can be a golden sky,” Kelly said, they hope to raise even more money this time round.
Kelly’s whole family have got involved with supporting homeless people.
She said: “We understand it's not a life choice.
“We understand that the problem is not so obvious in Barrow, because we don't see many people on the streets, but there is help available thanks to the efforts of FHSG and other similar organisations.”
Barrow AFC, Barrow Town Council and Westmorland and Furness Council.
The sleep-out event by Forty Winks 4 Furness is being sponsored by“Sleeping outside in November gives me a mix of emotions,” Kelly said.
“Naturally the idea of sleeping outside on a cold night without a tent makes you feel apprehensive but I'm quickly reminding myself that this is what some people deal with night after night.
“On the other hand, I’m excited about the positive impact we may have.”
Kelly has also been working on a song in aid of the charity and has produced her own cover of ‘You'll Never Walk Alone’.
She worked on the composition with musician John x Henry with the song now available on YouTube and soon to be released on Spotify.
“We picked this song as the lyrics alone are so beautiful and relate to what we hope people will experience,” Kelly said.
“It’s about support while moving through a storm and a feeling of not being alone.”
Kelly has always loved singing, starting when she was a little girl, and in recent years has been able to turn her hobby into the beginning of a career by booking gigs and training to be a vocal coach.
“At the very heart of it I just love to sing and wanted to do my bit,” she said.
