A new book has been released to celebrate the 170th anniversary of an iconic institution of Cumbria.

‘Amelia and her Time Travelling Trainers’, aimed at children up to the age of seven, was written by Elaina Moon and is based on Grasmere Gingerbread's upcoming celebrations.

The book will see the titular character travel all the way back to 1854 where she meets Sarah Nelson, the woman who founded the company inside her Church Cottage home in the Lake District.

Elaina said: "The Grasmere Gingerbread Shop is such a rich source of inspiration for me.

“There is something magical about the little building and tiny shop inside and the spicy-sweet aroma of gingerbread hanging in the air always fires up my imagination.”

Elaina, a former teacher, has grown to be a frequent visitor to the Lakes and has put pen to paper in the past thanks to the local attraction.

An earlier book entitled ‘Little Robin and the Delicious Gingerbread’ also featured the shop.

The author will be reading her new book in St Oswald's Church in Grasmere on Monday, October 28 and Tuesday, October 29 to coincide with the half-term break.

These sessions will run at 11am and 3pm on both days and will be free to enter.

Joanne Hunter, co-director of the bakery, said she was 'thrilled' when she first heard of the idea.

“Children love visiting The Grasmere Gingerbread Shop and Elaina’s story brings Sarah Nelson to life in such a lovely way,” she added.

“Timeslip stories such as Tom’s Midnight Garden have always been popular with children and I am sure Elaina’s new book will encourage youngsters to think about history and the past.”

Elaina will be selling signed copies of her book at the storytelling sessions and children who are pre-booked onto one of the sessions will receive a complimentary star-shaped piece of gingerbread.
