A BMW driver has been ordered to pay over £1,000 to a court after he was caught drug driving in Barrow.

Mark Singleton, of Mill Bank on Walney, was stopped by road traffic officers on December 19 last year while driving his BMW 3-series on Park Road in Barrow.

The 36-year-old was asked to conduct a DrugWipe test at the roadside as the police had reason to believe the man had been driving illegally.

The results revealed Singleton had 106 ug/L of Benzoylecgonine - the main metabolite of cocaine, in his blood.

The government currently has the legal ‘zero tolerance’ limit for Benzoylecgonine set at 50 ug/L.

Singleton originally denied the offence but changed his plea to guilty at South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court on October 8.

As a result, he was fined £600 and disqualified from driving for 36 months.

Magistrates also ordered he pay £300 towards court courts and a £240 surcharge.
