THE Ministry of Defence has warned that aircraft will be flying over Cumbria as part of training exercises.

The department said two training exercises would be taking place later this month that would see fast jet and transport aircraft fly over the county.

Aircraft will fly over a number of areas across the country as part of Exercise Steadfast Noon between October 15 and 23 and Exercise Strike Warrior from October 14 to 27.

The MoD published advance details of the areas where aircraft would fly over ahead of the exercises.

The county of Cumbria makes Low Flying Area 17, with the country split up into 20 such areas.

Explaining how Cumbria is used for training exercises, the MoD said: "The terrain in LFA 17 is valuable in terms of flying training practice, particularly for fast jet aircrew as the area is relatively free from large urban areas.

"In addition, this Area is used by Tucanos from RAF Linton-on-Ouse for flying training purpose.

"This Area represents 5.71% of the total useable overland area of the UK Low Flying System."
