A MOUNTAIN rescue team has received a drone, which is described as a 'valuable' piece of equipment to use in rescues.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team also has a drone officer to operate the flying machine.

Matt the equipment officer recently passed his exam to gain the General Visual Line of Sight certificate, a qualification that allows him to fly drones commercially in the UK. This is also known as a drone licence.

"The drone has already been put to use for a search rescue," a spokesperson from the team said. "It will be a valuable use of equipment to support with searches of lost casualties not just for Patterdale Mountain Rescue but supporting other teams with rescues."
