A GROUP has started to make up to ten thousand poppies which will cascade down the Sir John Barrow Monument on Remembrance Day.
Woollen poppies will stream from the top of the 90-foot-high monument on top of the 400-foot hill, which will be seen for miles away.
The idea is planned for next year's Remembrance Day (11 November, 2025).
Clare Parkin, who came up with the idea with Graham Scrogham, had the first meeting on Saturday where a group began to make the thousands of poppies.
The net to which the poppies will be attached is planned to be around 50 square meters, with poppies being three inches in diameter. It is estimated that a minimum of 1,000 poppies will be needed for the day.
Clare began making the poppies at the Emmanuel Christian Centre, Ulverston, where it cost £2 each to knit or crotchet poppies last weekend. The group will meet the last Saturday of each month.
There are two drop-off points where people can drop off their poppies in Ulverston, including Croftlands Laundrette and the wool stall in the market.
There is also one at the Barrow and District Disability Association on School Street in Barrow.
