Two teens from Furness have helped Team GB pick up a victory at an international motocross event.

Finley Pickering of Askam and Jamie Keith of Ireleth were competing in Coupe de l'Avenir in Belgium over the weekend to cap what has been a successful year on the circuit for the two boys.

However, the event could not have started worse for Finley, aged 14, who suffered a 'horrific' crash in qualifying on Saturday, September 28.

Following the event, it was revealed that Finley had sustained a broken foot and knee in the process, but he refused to let this stop him.

His mum, Kim Kavanagh, explained: "His coach told him to rest but his words to his dad were to just fix his bike.

"He got carried to his bike and he rode in three races to get points for his team, with them eventually getting the overall win."

Motohead, a magazine for lovers of all things to do with motocross, described Finley as a 'hero' for giving GB just enough points for them to claim first place.

It was an event that was full of difficulty for Jamie too, who went into the tournament leading the British Youth Nationals.

Having placed second in both of his first two races at the weekend, Jamie's bike began to lose power, eventually leaving him with a 'DNF' to his name.

"He was heartbroken because he's worked hard all year for this," Kim added.

"The last race came and he wanted to show the crowd why he should have won the championship, and he went on to win that race with a nice gap and good lap times."

Ultimately, Jamie finished second in the national rankings, though still had a chance to celebrate on Sunday with his age group coming away with the victory for Team GB.

For both Finley and Jamie, they are already looking towards next year, where they will be hoping to taste similar levels of success - with hopefully fewer bumps in the road.
