A group in Barrow did its best to keep on track last weekend as it took part in an annual competition.

Members of the Furness Amateur Radio Society (FARS) were involved in the 'Railways on the Air' celebration on Sunday, September 29.

The club joined with 45 other societies to work from nearby railway stations, including three stations from Northern Ireland, one from Poland, and even one from Brazil.

Graham Postlethwaite said: "In previous years, we have operated from Haverthwaite, but this year thought we would try something a little different and centred our operation in Barrow Park at the excellent model layout operated by the Furness Model Railway Club.

"Our club chairman, Chris, even had a go operating one of his radio sets from the train as it whizzed around the track.

"The set up 'on land' as it were was extremely successful with lots of contacts made across the globe - we might even get a certificate for our efforts."
