READERS have been reacting on Facebook to the news we brought you earlier this week of a Cumbrian hospital having the second most affordable car park in the country.

It comes after research conducted by Moneybarn Car Finance found parking at Furness General Hospital, in Barrow, cost just £2.50 for two hours.

The research found Salford Royal Hospital had the cheapest car parking in the UK after charging drovers £2 to park their car for two hours.

Furness General shares the number two spot with Darent Valley Hospital, in Dartford, Kent.

However, South Cumbrian residents were disappointed with the results with many believing that staff should not have to pay.

Adam Barker commented: “I don’t like to moan about much, but one thing I will do is moan about making people pay to work in a place that looks after people.

“Or even charging people to go see sick people. The owners of the car park should be ashamed of themselves.”

Joan Higgins said: “They should all be free never mind what they call affordable.”

Travey Garnett said: “It’s a disgrace thar staff have to pay and it is reflected how unaffordable it is with the amount of cars blocking up the streets on the Hawcoat estate.”

Carol Lomas said: “Still shocked staff have to pay. It’s a fortune if you’re visiting for a hospital appointment.”

Gary Rees commented: “Unbelievable to charge to visit patients. Do staff still have to pay to go to work and park? Disgraceful.”

Kate Murray said: “£2 for an hour soon adds up if you need to have regular visits. They need more short stay options.”

Jean Wilson said: “You shouldn’t have to pay at all.”
