A590: 15 new speed cameras to be placed along route

The 11-mile stretch between Ayside and Brettargh Holt roundabout, which stretches from Cartmel to Kendal, has been identified as having a 'high percentage' of incidents that lead to injuries or fatalities.

The plans have come about following a 'detailed review' by National Highways, who will be carrying out the work from autumn this year.

National Highways Project Manager Amy Gaskell said: “Safety is, and will always be, our number one priority and we’re always exploring ways to improve safety on our roads.

"Following a detailed review to improve safety on the A590 and reduce harm to road users, we’re planning to install average speed enforcement camera technology to enforce existing speed limits.

"The cameras will be installed at 15 locations between Ayside and Brettargh Holt roundabout, along with associated signage."

The most recent incident at the roundabout happened earlier this month, adding more impetus to the new plans.

Beginning in the coming weeks, the work is currently expected to be completed by early 2025.

The cameras will need to be connected to an appropriate power source, with signage create to warn drivers of the approaching speed cameras.

"We’ll share exact dates once they are confirmed," Mrs Gaskell added. 

"Work to install these cameras will be carried out overnight, or during off peak day time hours, to keep disruption to road users to a minimum.”

Due to the nature of the work, National Highways informed residents that it is likely to generate some noise and cause delays to certain journeys.

They apologised for any inconvenience that will be caused and thanked the local community for their ongoing patience and understanding.
