A refugee currently living in south Cumbria has thanked his new community for welcoming him with open arms.

Their words came after the recent Ulverston Lantern Festival, which took place on Saturday, September 14.

The man is currently being supported by Furness Refugee Support and is residing in Barrow, though was inspired by the trip to Ulverston to share his gratitude for being able to play a small part in proceedings.

He said: "Thank you, Barrow, and thank you, Ulverston, for showing me what it means to be part of a community that celebrates life with light, love, and joy.

"This was more than just a festival - it was a reminder that, no matter where we come from, we can all come together to create something beautiful.

"The Lantern Parade radiated positivity, showcasing the rich and welcoming culture of the British people.

"The festival was not just about lights and music; it was about unity, love, and the beauty of community spirit - I felt proud and honoured to be part of such a diverse and accepting community that celebrated togetherness with so much joy."

This year's theme for the lantern festival was 'Story Time', which saw children and adults bring their favourite books to life.

"It was not just a festival, it was a joyful expression of creativity and togetherness," said the refugee.

"The sense of community was remarkable - it was as if the entire town had become one big family for the night.

"As the night went on, I couldn’t help but feel incredibly grateful to those who worked tirelessly to make this event so memorable - all the volunteers who had put their hearts into the festival created something truly magical.

"Their dedication and hard work brought so many people together, turning a simple night into a cherished memory."
