An eight-year-old girl from Millom has cut off nearly a metre of her hair to help cancer patients.

Ellie Maiden is raising money for the Little Princess Trust which provides real hair wigs, free of charge, to children and young people up to the age of 24 who have lost their hair through their cancer treatments.

She went through the big haircut on Saturday, September 21 at Macie's Hair and Beauty on Lapstone Road.

Ellie, who is described as being a happy and bubbly child, has a close family member who is currently undergoing cancer treatment, which inspired her to do something special in their honour.

Before the important appointment at the salon, Ellie attended the Millom Park Run on Saturday morning, hoping to further promote her fundraising efforts.

As well as creating wigs for people going through cancer, the Little Princess Trust also uses them for other conditions such as Alopecia.

The charity has grown into one of the largest funders of research into childhood cancer in the UK.

Having sported long, brunette locks for the majority of her life, Ellie and her mum Hannah described the haircut as a big decision to make - but one that will go towards a good cause.

Almost one metre of hair was collected from Ellie at the weekend, all of which will be used to put together a new wig for the charity.

On average, it costs £700 to provide just one of the specially made wigs, meaning Ellie's sacrifice is set to make a lot of difference.

Away from her hair, Ellie has also been focusing on bringing in monetary donations for the Trust.

Now sporting a new look - one which she is 'super pleased' with - Ellie is hoping her act of kindness will inspire further generosity in the community.
