WORKERS have been spotted at the damaged section of the 'historic' Walney channel walkway.

Pictures taken by resident Alan Williamson on Thursday, September 19, appear to show three workers and an excavator at the damaged section of the walkway.

Last year, the former Cumbria County Council announced that it had a licence to undertake works and that a new concrete slab was being 'fabricated to replace the damaged section.'

The authority's duties passed to the new Westmorland and Furness Council, which said it aimed to carry out the work in September 2023.

A spokesperson from the council said at the time: "We recognise the history and importance of the Walney channel walkway."

The walkway, connecting the island to the rest of Furness, can only be used at low tide.

Walney councillor Anita Husband told The Mail last year that the path is 'a part of the island.'
